Turban maker from Baroda India, named Avantilal Pannalalji Chavla has certified by world records India and amazing records for the Largest Turban (Paghri) Collection. He is a retired professor from M.S. University.
Avantilal Chavla was started making turbans in his young age, he considers the headgear to be a matter of prestige and tradition of India. Prof. Chavla, a Pagri Artist has made 20 types of turbans in last 25 years from 1988. He says that he don’t want to make money from his art but just try to bolster Indian tradition. He ties turbans to the bridegrooms in 5 minutes, free of cost.
Turbans are also known as saafa, patka, pigree, paghdi, paghri paagh, potia and phenta, pagot etc… Turbans come in various colours, textures and style representation seasons and occasion. The length can also vary and is signify an individual’s social, political or economical status. In India, pagri as headgears stands for respect, religious salutations and social identifications. From the type of wearing a pagdi or turban, you can identify person’s cast, creed, trade, religion, Profession or the region. In addition, paghri has a special place in Indian Culture and literature.
In Vedic period, it called Shirastran, Ushnish and Shirovastra in sanskrit language. Turban is made from a scarf of silk or cotton, usually colored or printed. It is wearing by wound round a hat or helmet and falling down behind as a protection against sun. In todays trand, it shows a royality of the person.
Shri Avantilal Chavala, 69, has an exclusive collection of different turbans from various religion and cast. A retired professor and PHD Holder tie a traditional turban to the visitor at his stall. He had a stall named ‘Turban Museum’ during the Garvi Gurjari National Craft Fair and Summit in Ahmadabad which was held on February 27, 2014.
