Ellis Bridge Ahmedabad History
Ellis Bridge was Construction started in 1889. This bowstring arch truss bridge was the first bridge of Ahmedabad constructed in 1892 at the cost of Rs 4.07 lakhs. Ellis Bridge was constructing by Himmatlal Dhirajram Bhachech. This 120 years old bridge has become an iconic landmark and symbol of Ahmedabad.
Original bridge was slim and not suited for heavy motorized traffic. Modern extensions have been constructed on either side of the original bridge to support heavy traffic. Later new material wings were constructed on both sides in 1997. Ellis Bridge was renamed as Swami Vivekananda Bridge but is still known to people by its old name.
