The Tapi River originates in the Betul district from a place called Multai. The Sanskrit name of Multai is Mulatapi, meaning original point of Tapi Mata or the Tapti River. Tapti is the daughter of Surya the Sun God and his wife Chhaya. Tapti is also known as sister of Lord Shani.
Tapti River was named after India Tapi River in August 1915. Tapi River in Gujarat is also mentioned in Srimad- Bhagavatam as one of a number of great holy rivers of India.
