Asiatic Lion is “Brand Ambassador of Gujarat”

The Gir is known as home of the Asiatic lion in all over the world. Asiatic Lion in Gir Forest is always center of attraction for local Gujaratis, Indian and Forest Tourist. The lion was once widely distributed in Asia Minor and Arabia through Persia to India.

The Asiatic lion in India is now found in only one pocket located in the Gir National Park, Gir Forest of the state of Gujarat. There have been efforts made to relocate a small number of these lions to another park to try and ensure better survival chances of this majestic animal.

Gir Asiatic Lion has been declared the most endangered large cat species in the world. Their numbers ranging Between 250 - 300, all concentrated in the same area, they are under the constant threat of being wiped out by some deadly epidemic.

By the end of the last century, the then Nawab of Junagadh indicated the number of lion to be a dozen in the Gir. Gir Forest Lions struggled to survive during one of the most severe famines between the years 1901 to 1905 as they killed many human beings and domestic cattle.

Gir is the only home for pure Asiatic lion. A breeding centre has been established in the Sakkarbaug Zoo Junagadh with an objective to studying the Asiatic lion and supply of pure Asiatic lion to various zoos in the india and abroad. It has bred 180 lions in captivity.

So far 126 Asiatic Lions have been given to various zoos both in India and abroad from Gir Forest and Lion Breeding Center. Continual observation about biological behaviour of Asiatic Lions is of immense help for enhancing knowledge and improving management practices for the genus.
