Contract farming, the term may be new to many but has been in full force for many years. It is an agreement between a company and the farmers to produce a particular commodity if certain quality standards and quantity are met. This is a very lucrative proposition for the farmers because in many cases, the contract farming company commits to support these farmers with every possible means in order to get the crop or farm product of the desired quantity.
In Gujarat, the concept of contract farming has been in existence for many years but in the recent years, this has seen some major companies investing heavily into it. McCain, one of the industry giants into frozen foods has entered into a contract for farming and producing potatoes with the farmer association of Gujarat. Under this agreement, the company will bring 8,000 hectares of lands for its purpose by the year 2014.

Similar is the case of Saraf Foods, which is a Vadodara based frozen foods company. It plans to bring 600 hectares of land under the cultivation of sweet corn. The company is in the genre of producing frozen vegetables and other items for the national as well as international market and has great plans for future. In fact, the company has already started its trial production of dried herbs such as oregano, basil, rosemary, thyme, sage etc.
