CLEAN INDIA Campaign 2014 Launched by Narendra Modi on Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti
PM Narendra Modi launched the Swachh Bharat, or Clean India, Mission on the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. The Mission will aim to make India ‘clean’ by October 2, 2019, Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary.
PM Modi is joined by chief ministers, lawmakers, prominent personalities from various fields along with lakhs of countrymen in a drive that is expected to cost nearly Rs 2 lakh crore. PM Modi flagged off the Clean India mission at Valmiki Basti, a housing society in central Delhi for sanitation workers. The PM swept a small area, paid his respects at a temple, dedicated public toilets to residents and conducted a surprise sanitation inspection on the local police station.
PM Modi then joined Delhi’s ceremonial central avenue, where school-children, union cabinet ministers, Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung, actor Aamir Khan and boxer Vijender Singh at Rajpath. PM Narendra Modi presented awards to the winners of this campaign logo and slogan contest for the Mission, whose winning entries were part of all publicity material.
Cleanliness should not be the job of only sanitation workers, PM Modi said.PM Modi has invited 9 celebrities including Goa Governor Mridula Sinha, Shashi Tharoor, millenium cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, actors Salman Khan, Priyanka Chopra and Kamal Haasan, industrialist Anil Ambani, yoga guru Baba Ramdev, and the team of the TV serial Tarak Mehta ka Ultah Chashma – to join him in his cleanliness mission, and asked them to further nominate another nine, and so on.
PM Modi addressed the present people in Hindi and talked about mostly on sanitary problems and then led schoolchildren for a kilometer-long walk. PM Modi also asked citizens to give their 2 hours every week to clean their surroundings and to give Mahatma Gandhi the gift of Clean India for his 150th birth anniversary in 2019.
