NRI- Non Resident Indian Day is celebrated every year on 9th January. This day is also known as ‘Pravasi Bharatiya Divas’. NRI day is celebrated to mark the contribution of the overseas Indian community to the development of India.

The day commemorates the return of Mahatma Gandhi from South Africa in Bombay on 9 January 1915. Established in 2003, it is sponsored by the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs of the government of India and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and the Ministry of Development of the North Eastern Region of India.

A special event is held on 7–9 January each year in an Indian city: a forum for issues concerning the Indian Diaspora is organized and the ‘Pravasi Bharatiya Samman’ Awards are given.
Why NRI Day is celebrated in India?
NRI day or PBD (Pravasi Bharatiya Divas) is celebrated to know the contribution of Indian Community from across the country and the world. In 2015 the Pravasi Bharatiyta Divas was held in Gandhinagar Gujarat along with Vibrant Gujarat Summit 2015 and was attended by 1500 people from different countries. The celebration of NRI day can be a very large platform for non-resident Indians across the Globe to participate in live mega conferences and various activities of entertainment, social and economic nature.
