Rajkot Patola Sarees business is now registered with GI tag so that now there will be no more copy of famous patola saree designs of Rajkot. Patola is a famous saree type of Gujarat and in demand worldwide.
Saurashtra’s rich handicraft of Patola Saree is registered with trade name and trademark of ‘Rajkot Patola’. As per the Government’s contract with WTO, the Rajkot patola saree design cannot be copied in 182 countries of the world.
Rajkot Patola Saree is famous for its design of Hati, Popat, Navratan, Malekchok, Narikunjar, Daliya Bhat, Ghughro, Mor Zad and more. These are all famous Saurashtra design for Patola. The beautiful double-ikat 900-year-old craft, which was an important commodity of trade between Gujarat and southeast Asia for over 500 years, cannot be duplicated anymore, as it gets the GI recognition for its products under the name Rajkot Patola.
The GI tag will protect the originality of Rajkot patola. The technique to weave a patola sari is unique to Rajkot Saurashtra and does not exist elsewhere. As per the history, Patan’s Maharani brought artists of Patola saree from her family in Maharashtra.
Rajkot and Surendranagar city’s single ‘Ikat’ Patola and its artists gets more respect. Around 5000 Patola artists are working on Patola design in the Saurashtra region with more than 30 ‘Patola Shalo’. The making process of Patola saree is very complicated and its material is also very costly that is the reason for high price of Patola Sarees. Rajkot Patola sarees are very popular in South India.
Patan Patola are also famous worldwide but now Saurashtra region’s Rajkot Patola get Geographical Indication (GI) tag which will protect rich work of Patola saree from being copied. |
