Dhank Caves near Upleta Rajkot Gujarat - History Information and Photos
The Dhank cave is located in Dhank village near Upleta Rajkot. Dhank is a small village in Guajarat State India. It is 103 kms from Rajkot. In the 7th Century Dhank caves has been engraved. The caves are of white chalky sandstone made with the chisel instrument during the rule of Kshatrapas.
The cave is based on the Jain culture and Buddhist culture. There are statues of Bodhisattva in the Buddhist cave. There are main 25th Bodhisattvas carved on the rock. According to the H.D. Sankila there are many sculpture of Kayotsarga doing meditation. One picture of Rishabhnatha is also. The photos are not very much clear.
On side of the Sinhasan the chair of the king or God is of the lion and Jina with two whisky bear bottles and in the second icon of Jina knight in shining armor doing meditation and icon looks like peaceful and calm. Jina means a teacher of Buddhism who has achieved salvation in his karma. On the Jina head there is a 3 canopy. An icon of deer is symboled on 16th God Shantinatha.
The statue of the God Patshwanatha is dress or covered with the ornament of cobra hood and it is preserved in a good condition. The sculpture of Jaina yakshi name Ambika is sitting under the mango tree with a child in his arm. The Ambika is a Goddess Mother of Jainism. She is also known as Ambai, Amba, Sasana Devi, Amra Kushmandini and the Protector Goddess.
The caves of Dhank are recognized by the Jain Digambaran. The architecture of the caves is very unique in the history of caves because all caves are different and the imprinted made on the rock caves is amazing. |
