Sabarmati Gandhi Ashram Ahmedabad
Sabarmati Ashram is a national monument owing to it being a part of the legacy of the Father of the Nation. It is also known as the Harijan Ashram or Gandhi Ashram. The name Sabarmati Ashram is because the river of the same name flows by the side of the ashram.
History of Sabarmati Ashram Ahmedabad
The ashram is synonymous with the Dandi March of 1930 and had been the house of Mahatma Gandhi for at least 12 years of his life. He got the ashram relocated from the original location of Kocharab Bungalow belonging to Jivanlal Desai because he wanted to do some farming and rear cattle. Another reason for the Ashram being historically important is because this was the original site of Dadhichi Rishi’s ashram as well.
Present day Sabarmati Ashram
In the present times, the ashram consists of a museum known as the Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalay. The ashram also has Nandini, which is a guest house for visiting dignitaries, and Vinoba Kutir, which is also known as Mira Kutir. The ashram also comprises of Upasana Mandir, which is where Gandhiji offered solutions to problems as the head of the family. The place also contains large photos of Gandhiji which are pictorial testimonials to the entire history of our fight for independence. It traces the landmark event which happened in the independence struggle.
Apart from these; ashram has a well-stocked library, which contains archival records of Gandhiji’s publishing. There is an entire gallery of original oil paintings and an area full of his quotes and letters and other imperative artefacts.
