History of Holi Festival in India
The earliest textual reference to the celebration of Holi is found in the 7th century. There was once a sprite king by the name of Hiranyakashyap who won over the empire of earth. Hiranyakashyap was so selfish that Hiranyakashyap commanded everybody in his kingdom to worship only him. But to his great disappointment, Hiranyakashyap son, Prahlad became an enthusiastic follower of Lord Naarayana and refuse to worship his father.
Hiranyakashyap tried several ways to kill his son Prahlad but Lord Vishnu saved Prahlad every time. Finally, Hiranyakashyap asked his sister, Holika to enter a glowing shoot with Prahlad in Holika lap. For, Hiranyakashyap knew that Holika had a help, whereby, Holika could enter the fire safe.
