Vadodara is a city synonymous with series of palaces, also termed as the Maharaja Palace, constructed by the Gaekwads, a prominent Maratha family that started ruling Baroda. Later on, the very famous Laxmi Vilas Palace was built, which reflects charm and royalty. Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III built this magnificent palace in the year 1890.

Laxmi Villas Palace could be easily termed as a major tourist attraction in Vadodara and enjoy the repute of being extremely famous across the world because of its magnificence and size. The palace is said to be the largest private dwelling built till date in the world and enjoys being four times the size of Buckingham Palace. During the mid 18^th century when it was being constructed, it boasted of all present day amenities such as elevators and the interiors are reminiscent of a large European country house.

The Darbar Hall, plays venue to large music concerts and other cultural events, is decorated with Venetian mosaic floor and Belgian stained glass windows to name a few. The palace also houses a large and remarkable collection of the old armory and sculptures in bronze, marble and terracotta by Fellici, in its Fateh Singh Museum.

To add to the abundant glory, Maharaja got a miniature railway line or toy train constructed, so that his children could move freely from the main palace to the present day museum compound, which used to serve as their school during those days.

Tourism is being promoted and the palace along with its gardens and Museum is open to the public at specific timings.
